The project was a private initiative of the Vickers company and therefore did not have an official project “A” designation, unlike other British tanks. The starting point for the creation of “Valentine” were three previously created by the company “Vickers” – cruising tanks Mk I (A9) and Mk II (A10), as well as infantry tank “Matilda Mk I” (A11). The new tank was designed as an infantry, but at the same time it was supposed to use the successful solutions used on cruising tanks, as well as as many of their components and units. The vertical armor was planned to leave 60 mm, as on the A11, but the armament was to grow from a machine gun to a 40-mm gun in a double turret. In order to prevent an excessive increase in the mass of the tank at a given level of booking, which would lead to the impossibility of using the chassis and engine-transmission unit A10, the designers of “Valentine” had to go to the maximum compression of the future tank. The resulting tank was difficult to unambiguously classify as infantry or cruising tanks – until 1940, its armor was somewhat understated by the standards of infantry tanks, but low speed (twice lower than the cruising Mk III) did not allow it to become a cruiser. Later, however, as practice has shown, he was quite successful in both roles. Drawings of the new tank were submitted to the Ministry of War on February 10, 1938, and by March 14 its full-size model was ready. Initially, however, the project was rejected by the military. The reason for this was primarily a double turret, which forced the tank commander to engage in the maintenance of the gun, which at the time was considered unacceptable by British military experts. Although Vickers also developed a special 40-mm automatic gun for the new machine with characteristics close to a 40-mm anti-tank gun, significantly eliminating this shortcoming, this option was not accepted by the Ministry of Defense. But the proximity of a possible war contributed to the adoption of the tank, and more than a year later, on April 14, 1939, the company “Vickers” was ordered to produce the first series of “Valentines”. Initially, the new tank received the standard military designation – “Infantry Tank, Model 3” (English Tank Infantry Mk III), and some modifications were to be marked with asterisks in the name, for example, Tank Infantry Mk III ***, but later, for convenience, The tank was given its own name – “Valentine” (English Valentine), and some modifications were given a digital name, such as Valentine Mk III (or simply Valentine III). There is no unambiguous data about the origin of this name, there are several versions. According to one of them, the tank got this name because the project was presented to the Ministry of Defense on Valentine’s Day, February 14. In fact, the presentation took place on February 10. According to another version, “Valentine” is just an abbreviation of the full name of the company “Vickers” – Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd., Elswick & Newcastle-upon-TYNE. According to another, the tank was named after John Valentine Cardin, a well-known armored vehicle designer who worked for Vickers for many years. The first production Valentine came off the Vickers assembly line in May 1940, and Metro Cammell and Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Co. joined production in July of that year. The total output of the first modification of the “Valentine”, Valentine Mk I, equipped with a gasoline engine AEC A189, was, according to various sources, from 309 to 350 units. Production of two more versions was soon launched. Valentine Mk II differed from the original modification by the AEC A190 diesel engine, a reduced volume of the internal fuel tank and an additional external tank, a new radio station № 19, as well as a number of minor differences. Valentine Mk IV was broadly identical to the Mk II, but differed in the installation of the imported American diesel engine GMC 6-71 6004 and other transmissions.
