This is a very nice 30″ vent rib Remington Wingmaster 870 TARGET barrel that has been further modified with multiple custom features to optimize it for shooting trap. Manufactured in 1988 according the date code stamped on the barrel, this Target model 870 Wingmaster barrel came with a factory “STEP” type ventilated rib, factory back-boring to reduce recoil, a 2.75″ inch chamber instead of the 3″ that field and hunting models had, a lighter contour to the barrel, a front bead sight AND a factory mid-bead. While many of the 870, 1100, 11-87 “Target” barrels you see will be fixed choke, this particular barrel appears to have been made with the Remchoke system from the factory, as it was made 2 years after Remington introduced their interchangeable choke system. Whether this barrel was bought as an extra barrel by itself, or if it was part of a complete gun, we are not sure. Regardless of it’s origin, the prior owner decided to take it to the “next level” by fully customizing it. The most visible modification is of course the extended-height competition type ventilated rib assembly on it. This extended height vent rib was attached over-top of the factory ventilated rib, by way drilling and tapping it in 5 places. It was then bolted-on using 5 cap-head machine screws keyed for an Allen wrench. There were 2 of these screws placed fairly close together at the rear where it is the tallest and heaviest, one near the very last post at the muzzle, and then two more screws spaced out evenly between the two end sections, to secure the whole assembly evenly. This extended height rib is specific to shooting trap, and greatly improves the ease at which a shooter can get their head down on the gun and their aim properly lined-up to the axis of the bore when shooting. The barrel was ported professionally as well. It’s likely the same gunsmith or company that fit the extended height competition type rib assembly on the gun did the porting at the same time. The porting consists of 11 evenly spaced holes drilled in 2 offset lines running parallel to the bore on each side, for 22 ports on each side, and a total of 44 ports. The porting starts a few inches rearward of where the choke tube ends inside the bore, and they are located between what would be 11 and 12 o’clock on the left, and 12 and 1 o’clock on the right, with the vent rib located at 12 o’clock. This porting achieves two things, the most important of the two is the reduction of recoil. The second would be the reduction in muzzle rise or deflection at the shot. The ports allow the gasses created when firing to vent upward rather than forward and outward from the muzzle. This pushes the muzzle more downward instead of of rearward and up, reducing the kick felt on the shoulder as well as reducing the amount of effort needed to bring the muzzle downward to get back in-line for a second shot when shooting doubles. The sum total of all of the modifications added to this barrel, which as a “Target” model was already designed and optimized for shooting clays in trap and skeet, was to raise the performance ceiling of what the barrel was capable of doing, reduce the felt recoil by the shooter and thus reduce fatigue when practicing or in competition, and ultimately improve the shooter’s scores by making it easier to be as consistent from shot to shot as possible. The prior owner did that very well we believe. More importantly still, the only custom feature installed that limits the barrel usage to shooting trap specifically is TOTALLY REMOVABLE. With the removal of 5 screws the extended rib assembly is off, then with the re-installation of the front sight bead, and the proper choke tube installed, the barrel is ready to be used for shooting trap, skeet, sporting clays, doves, quail, or any other small game. It will look like any other 30″ Remington 870 Wingmaster barrel with ports. The original gloss-blue factory finish is still intact, bright, and shiny, showing only some minor spots of wear and handling marks. The factory markings are still sharp and 100% legible, and the factory ventilated rib (the step type) is still in great shape as well, tight to the barrel with no visible damage and a 100% solid joint. The bore in this barrel is mirror-bright and clean, with no pitting, bulges, or damage of any kind visible from the muzzle to the chamber. The threads for the interchangeable choke tubes are clean and totally unmarred, and the magazine tube ring has a perfect 100% intact joint to the barrel. Judging by the condition of this barrel, both the inside and outside, as well as the bore and the factory finish, this barrel has 90% or more of it’s service life still intact. Just look at the barrel extension at the rearmost point of the barrel, the finish wear and mechanical wear to the metal itself in this spot is an excellent indicator of how much it has been shot. As you can see from the pictures, there is only some extremely minor finish wear that is totally superficial un nature. The metal itself is 100% intact and free from any missing/worn-away material. If you shoot a Remington 870 Wingmaster field gun to shoot trap, you should do yourself a favor and give this barrel a try. It should improve your score in a meaningful way AND make it much easier on your shoulder and body to practice. As with all things competitive, practice is everything. If you find that you don’t practice as much as you would like to due to the pain and soreness you experience afterward, this barrel should make a significant difference in reducing that pain from recoil alone. It will also make it much easier to get in the same posture and position each time you step up to shoot. We would recommend getting a slip-on comb or cheekpiece for the buttstock that has different height pads you can swap out. Combine that slip-on cheekpiece with this barrel on your shotgun, and then experiment with different pads until you find the right height combo that makes it as natural and as effortless as possible to shoulder the gun while simultaneously creating a cheek-weld that gives you a perfect sight picture down the rib. Once you find that combination, it should make a HUGE difference in how much fun you have shooting and your score!
